Shoot Day #1 (14th November '13):

It was interesting going on set for a film about the Staffordshire delicacy of Oatcakes when, having lived in stoke for 2 years, I never really knew about them or had one. Having popped my 'Oatcake Cherry' I can agree that they are very filling and can boost you for a whole day, and that was only a normal sized one. After discussions and the crews poor attempts at trying to make some oatcakes of our own, Terry (owner of TJ's Oatcake Shop) showed and demonstrated a giant oatcake ring which was at least quadruple the size of an ordinary one (Left).

The Ultimate Guide To The Oatcake
Directed and Produced by George Smith

My Role: 2nd Camera Operator and Lighting

Working with Amy Styran as the visual team again worked very well with us both having similar styles and ideas, allowing us to bounce creative ideas off one another. We're both very good friends and a good duo assisting each other with track and dolly shots, 2 camera set ups, lens changes, footage transfers and shoulder rig shots.

The shoot as a whole, starting at 7:30/8am and finished by 12:30pm, went very smoothly and got an awful lot of footage and interviews for George.

Shoot Day #2 (18th November '13):

With the second shoot day taking place in the shoot studio, for a standard 9-5pm day, it was again very relaxed yet with more of a structure of shots George wanted and lighting styles. As lighting/gaffer and 2nd camera & assistant I was right in my element creating the lighting styles and using my 5D Mark II to its best ability in warm and contrasting light. Again working with Amy seemed to work well, helping each other with track and dolly shots, doing 2 camera set ups to save time and achieve the desired cinematic style shots Amy and George were after. Amy and I always work well as a team when it comes down to getting the ideal styles due to our similar tastes in style that we both agreed on. Seeing the film in post-production I am happy with how everything turned out visually and how well George has pulled it all together to create an entertaining and educational film about the story of the Oatcake. Looking forward to the end result!
